As I'm starting to write this the news announces a human death from the West Nile Virus (WNV). Can your horse transmit it to you? NO but it is a problem for everyone. Horses are vaccinated for alot of diseases that mosquitoes transmit to them--WNV, Eastern encephalitis, Western encephalitis and Venezuelan encephalitis (seen mostly down south).
Treatment for these can be very expensive and some cases are fatal so it is worth while to vaccinate every year--it is a proven fact that immunity only lasts one year and a bad idea to put it off! Because of our poor economy over the past few years many people are skipping vaccines but we really don't recommend that.
If you suspect your horse may have one of these you will notice neurological signs--walking like a drunk, doesn't place feet correctly, droopy lip, off feed, disinterested in his environment and many more.
